ACADEMICS AND TEACHING

Teaching, training and academic work

Arthroscopic surgery advances through teaching, publication and honest discussion of results between surgeons. Alongside clinical practice, Dr. Prashant Parate trains fellows and residents, conducts cadaveric workshops, and has helped build arthroscopy services at several institutions.

Fellowship and resident training

Dr. Prashant currently trains two MUHS fellows in the arthroscopy department at Sainath Hospital, Moshi. Their training covers shoulder and knee arthroscopy, sports injuries, surgical planning, perioperative care and postoperative rehabilitation.

At MGIMS, Sevagram, he trained orthopaedic residents in clinical examination, decision-making, surgical planning and the management of shoulder and knee disorders.

Cadaveric workshops

Dr. Prashant has conducted cadaveric workshops in shoulder and knee surgery at MGIMS, Sevagram. These gave orthopaedic residents and practising surgeons hands-on exposure to surgical anatomy, arthroscopic portal placement, ligament reconstruction and commonly performed shoulder and knee procedures.

Cadaveric training remains one of the few settings where a surgeon can rehearse a difficult step without a patient on the table, and it is a part of teaching worth protecting.

Invited faculty and presentations

Stryker Arthroscopy Summit, Pune Chapter, July 2026

Invited faculty. Presentation: Tackling Complex Massive Rotator Cuff Tears, covering portal planning, the stepwise release ladder, tension-free repair, cuff mapping and the case for partial repair where complete coverage is not achievable. The approach presented is set out for patients in the massive rotator cuff tear guide.

Dr. Prashant has served as faculty at the Pune Knee Course and at the Maharashtra Orthopaedic Association conference, alongside several other shoulder and knee meetings, contributing to discussions on surgical technique, clinical decision-making, complex and revision cases, rehabilitation, and developments in arthroscopy and joint-preservation surgery.

Organising academic programmes

Dr. Prashant served as Organising Secretary of the Nagpur Arthroscopy Meet, responsible for planning and conducting an academic programme focused on arthroscopy, sports injuries and advances in shoulder and knee surgery.

Building arthroscopy departments

Establishing an arthroscopy service involves considerably more than operating. It means developing clinical pathways, selecting appropriate equipment, coordinating surgical and theatre teams, standardising rehabilitation protocols, and creating systems for managing complex shoulder and knee conditions.

Institution Contribution
MGIMS, Sevagram Helped establish arthroscopy work and trained orthopaedic residents in assessment, planning and management of shoulder and knee disorders
Alexis Multispeciality Hospital, Nagpur Contributed to the development of the arthroscopy department
Sainath Hospital, Moshi, PCMC Continues to develop the arthroscopy department through patient care, surgical education, fellowship training and structured treatment protocols

Publications

Published in Arthroscopy Techniques, a peer-reviewed journal dedicated to describing and refining arthroscopic surgical technique.

Academic interests

Advanced shoulder and knee arthroscopy. Complex and revision rotator cuff surgery. Ligament reconstruction and multi-ligament knee injury. Meniscus preservation and root repair. Joint-preservation strategies including realignment surgery. Robotic and conventional knee replacement. Surgical education and clinical outcomes.

Dr. Prashant also has an interest in how technology and artificial intelligence can improve patient education and shared decision-making, on the view that these should support sound clinical judgement, careful examination and honest communication rather than replace them.
